“Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness!” John Keats Autumn is something that has inspired poets, composers and visual artists since the mists of time…. How visual artists actually do it is almost alchemical. Landscapes are shrouded, shadows are lengthened and colours are saturated. Lucy Winterson uses pigment, sand and acrylic to arrive at her misty composites; Paul Lane paints digitally, Sturla Strand employs photography and Stella Dunkley & Diane Griffiths use acrylics. But in the main, the artists shown love to use oils for conjuring the gradations of colour that evoke the nostalgic haze that we associate with Autumn in the British Isles.
