“I would sooner be a foreigner in Spain than in most countries. How easy it is to make friends in Spain!” George Orwell. When June arrives bringing summer heat, one’s thoughts and passions may often turn to hot places… Spain is: toreadors in bright silks, sunflower fields and the clanking of fishing boats in harbours with glinting water. Our artists picture all these things yet also have a knack for going deeper in their quest to really know a subject. Richard Young captures the intensity of flamenco; George Heider imagines the last Moor leaving Spain and Paul Harris depicts the unusual subject of a woman striding through yellow cornfields with war on her mind. On an abstract note, Gail Altschuler’s decorative abstracts take inspiration from the majesty of the Alhambra.
