’All games have morals; and the game of Snakes and Ladders captures, as no other activity can hope to do, the eternal truth that for every ladder you hope to climb, a snake is waiting just around the corner, and for every snake a ladder will compensate…’Simon RushdieThe simple well known game seems to speak the terms of life, the twists and turns and steady ascent to the desired goal. With it’s symmetrical and balanced structure the stairway connotes a steady journey, whilst the snake suggets deceit and vengefulness. Helmuth Osborne’s nature inspired photography demonstrates a playful imagination as the rock face appears to come alive with a winding serpant. In contrast, pieces such as ’Stairs’ by Catherine Graham radiates a feeling of calm as she focuses on the banal but beautiful line of the commonplace stairway.
