The best thing about the future is that it comes one day at a time. Abraham Lincoln.I never think of the future – it comes soon enough. Albert Einstein The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams. Eleanor Roosevelt 100 years ago the Italian futurist Marinetti declared, “We want no part of it, the past…we the young and strong Futurists!” The futurist movement in Italy and Russia was a celebration of speed, technology and engineering, the revolutionary violence of the early 20th Century which swept away the old and worshipped at the altar of the new. In 2009/10 the hip young things looked back to their (great) grandparent’s era for inspiration from vintage clothing, flapper music and swingbeat, burlesque and cupcakes and the aesthetic of ’make do and mend’, but what will 2011 bring? A million minor revolutions and a whole load of new things to ’love’ and ’loathe’ because change is the only thing we can rely on. This week London Art presents contemporary visions of the future. Artists who depict the shape of things to come using the structures of the present like Lloyd Gill (’Multiverse2’) and Anna Creighton (’Cut Out City’); and artists whose work harks back to bold vision of the Futurists such as Carl Aman (’Love and Music’) and Cristina Ghelfi (’May’) and Constantine Lykiardopoulos (’Three Fourty Eight pm’) The future is ours! Happy New Year 2011 from London Art! Poros Kolossos by Lloyd GillCarl Aman Love and Music
