We all have idols. But we want them to remain idols. We don’t want to know about their hang-ups and insecurities, their nightmares and embarrassing failures. We want to hang them on the wall and worship at the altar of rock. We want to be lifted up by these angels of cool, up above street-level banality. If it’s nostalgia you’re after, we’ve got it in spades. You must check out Peter Gregory’s brilliant portrait of Jimi Hendrix or Brian Shepherd’s Bowie in Ground Control. For drawings try Pat Burke’s Jimi or Jim and Steve Whipp’s Madonna from her ’Erotica’ period. For cheap and cheerful pop iconography try Mike Stead’s two-tone classic Elvis or Madonna, Steven Barrat’s glitter portraits or Cathy Corker’s Beatles series. And if you haven’t seen his work before, have a look at Ed Chapman, our best-selling icon artist, who works in mosaic.
