“Who am I to blow against the wind?” Paul Simon After a recent “plume of air from Jamaica,” Britain now huddles against Storm Doris. It seems pertinent to ask “whither the wind…?” Is the answer blowing in the wind or is it “any way the wind blows…?!” It seems we humans aren’t content to think in terms of the simple movement of air created by changes in air pressure in the atmosphere. Rather, the wind is a potent metaphor for life itself.. Justin Lewis’ figures running along the beach with their coats held aloft, carry the “Sails of the Soul”. Andy Cook experiences painting ‘en plein air’ as being “In a Waterfall of Wind and Scent”. Nowadays, artists still paint helter skelters, blustery days and dandelions but as the climate changes, new images arise: ash clouds, wind turbines and windfarms. Peter Lancaster’s “Breath of Life” illustrates this meterological phenomenon: a single, stark wind turbine taking the place of a tree.
