‘Human nature is not black and white but black and grey.’Graham Greene ‘Harmony in Grey and Green: Miss Cicely Alexander’ is probably the well-known of monochromatic images of James Whistler. The portrait owes its subtle delicacy to the using of thin layers of paint and a narrow colour palette. The American painter derived his technique from the Chinese aesthetic claiming that all colours originate from grey. Through the following decades, many artists followed the path marked out by the master of monochromatic pictures trying to find all shades of grey.
