What is “The North” ? Is it a remnant of an industrial past as might be detected in Michael Johnson’s “Northern Blue” or Matthew David Evans’ ‘Flour Mill’? Is it a place, a construct, a cliche or a feeling? Quite possibly this depends where you come from. Indefinable but easy to recognise, it is there in Adrian Gatie’s hand printed silver gelatin photographs, which capture the spirit of a place, before it was laid bare to homogenised, pedestrian zones.

It also haunts Sue Mc Mullen’s “The Passageway”, bringing back childhood memories of ‘playing out’ in ‘the entry’. It could even be thought of as residing in some of the North’s most vociferous spokespeople as portrayed here.
