Being the first aviator to fly over the Atlantic Ocean in 1927, it is no surprise that Lindbergh should use a metaphor of space to describe human existence so perfectly. As an artistic medium, photography shares an inbuilt, hair-trigger sensitivity to distance, depth and close – up points of view. Nicky Wassall’s “Layers of Light” and “Black Scent” exemplify its facility to use space to move our emotions profoundly.Landscape artists love to use the positive or negative space that surrounds trees to imbue their expressive arboreal presence with anthropomorphic mood.
