Apples: the most ubiquitous of fruits and yet the most original. With over 7,500 varieties, they are a cornucopia of inspiration for our artists. Feast your eyes on apples served up as creative leitmotif: still lives, naturalistic and imaginative landscapes and apples in geometric formation. Julie Beresford and Minnie Wills play with the notion of ‘still-life’ with their all – action compositions of fruit with a highly polished sheen.

The apples in Patricia Clements’ superb colourful pastel Chinoiserie anchor the image amidst complexity and may be contrasted with David Watmough’s meditative pairing of two apples on a simple blue ground.

Carole Fulton’s photograph of windblown apples with figure scrumping in the distance, has an almost mystical air. This allusion to the apples’ mythological status is shared by Iran Lomeli’s beautiful virginal Eve in the garden
